Archibald Belaney

Grey Owl

Archibald Belany who later became known as Grey Owl sent was born at 32 St James’s Road, Hastings and later lived at 36 St Mary’s Terrace Hastings.

At the age of 17 years Archibald travelled to Canada where he worked as a trapper with the Ojibway Indians for several years. During this time he developed a wealth of experience about animals and the environments.

He used this experience and knowledge to write several books including “Pilgrims of the Wild”, “Adventures of Sajo and Her Beaver People” and “Men of the Lost Frontier”.

Following on from this Grey Owl travelled America and England giving lectures about nature and the environment to large audiences.

A film about his life starring Pierce Brosnan was made in 1999.
